An away team is a team of personnel that have been assembled to perform missions away from the starbase or starship.
Away Team Protocol
Communications
During an away mission it is recommended that the away team maintain frequent contact with the Starbase or Starship of origin. While, at times, this may not be possible it is required that all away teams report their status to the commanding officer or his/her designee at least once every twenty-four hours during an away mission. In the event that the away mission is of particular risk to the crewmembers assigned to the mission, such as a medical emergency, it is recommended to keep an open communications channel at all times.
Composition
An away team is required to consist of, at minimum, two persons; however, a team of at minimum four persons is highly recommended. Section 12, Paragraph 4 of the Starfleet code specifies that the Captain of a Starbase or Starship should not undertake away missions due to his/her responsibility to the overall mission. In the event that the Captain must accompany an away team the Captain and First Officer may not both be assigned to the mission. Additionally, the Captain must be accompanied by an armed member of the security detachment while on the assignment.
Transport
In the event that any away mission becomes untenable it is required that the away team make every effort to extract themselves from the danger and return to the Starbase or Starship in order to preserve their safety. Nonetheless, when any party encounters an unidentified contagion or infectious agent quarantine protocols are required to be enacted to ensure the safety of the crew. This action is to include full containment and eradication safety protocols. In the event that these protocols cannot be met the away team is not permitted to return to their host station or vessel until the threat has been neutralized. Additional away teams may be transported to the quarantine zone to investigate the contagion if the Duty Officer deems the investigation vital and reasonably free of danger.

A Diplomatic Team is a Starfleet away team sent to establish diplomatic relations with another group on behalf of the United Federation of Planets. A Diplomatic Team is one of the few Away Teams that can be led by a Commanding Officer.
