Project Jenolan is the code name for Starfleet's exploration of the Jenolan Dyson Sphere.
History
In 2294, shortly after the Khitomer Conference between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire the [[[Starfleet] transport ship USS Jenolan was assigned to transport passengers to the Norpin Colony in the Azure Sector. After an incident forced the vessel to drop out of warp the Jenolan found something entirely unexpected: a fully intact and uncharted Dyson Sphere. While conducting a standard survey of the Sphere the crew of the Jenolan attempted to make contact with anyone living inside of the Sphere and hailed one of the thousands of communications antennas detected on the surface. Triggering an automated response from the Sphere a series of Tractor Beams engaged and tried to pull the vessel inside, further damaging the vessel and causing it to crash upon the surface of the Sphere. All but two of the persons aboard the Jenolan were killed and the survivors - retired Captain Montgomery Scott and Starfleet Ensign Matt Franklin - transmitted a distress call and then utilized the Jenolan's Transporter to survive.
75 years later the crew of the Starship Enterprise-D detected the distress call and were led to the Dyson Sphere to investigate. After rescuing Captain Scott from the Jenolan, the Enterprise crew launched a full investigation of the Dyson Sphere and claimed it for the Federation. During their study the Enterprise triggered the same process as the Jenolan 75 years prior. Unable to fight against the tractor beams the Enterprise instead chose to enter the Sphere itself while a Starfleet Engineering team repaired the Jenolan. The damaged Enterprise determined that the Sphere was abandoned due to instability detected inside the G-Type Star at the center of the Sphere. Thanks to the assistance of the Jenolan - repowered through the work of Captain Scott and Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge - the Enterprise was able to escape before a solar flare destroyed the Galaxy Class vessel. The Jenolan herself was lost during the escape attempt.
The Enterprise remained on patrol of the Dyson Sphere as Starfleet deployed a full research team aboard the Starship Darwin at the request of the Federation Council. The Darwin had been recently reassigned from a long term investigation of the extinct Sarpedian race and noted several major similarities between their technology and that of the Sphere. The Horta crewed vessel remained at the Sphere until the outbreak of the Dominion War. For the entirety of the War the Federation maintained a watchful eye over the archeological site; however, long term exploration was impacted. It was not until 2380 that a new Starfleet expedition would be assigned.
Starfleet would continue to intermittently investigate the Dyson Sphere over the following decades until 2409 when the Dyson Sphere and its patrol vessel the Starship Ernest Gold went missing. In 2410 it was discovered that the Dyson Sphere and the USS Ernest Gold had been transported to the Alsuran Sector of the Delta Quadrant. Starfleet chose to utilize the Jenolan Dyson Sphere as the home of their operations in the Delta Quadrant. The Jenolan Sphere would remain in the Sector for over a decade until, for unknown reasons, it was transported to the Khitomer Sector of the Alpha Quadrant.
Knowing the importance of the Dyson Sphere, Starfleet assigned a permanent contingent to the Dyson Sphere and initiated Project Jenolan to investigate the site on a full time basis. The Project has been in operation since the Sphere returned to the Alpha Quadrant. It is currently under the direction of Captain Cadmus Adar.
