Location Alpha Quadrant, Milky Way Galaxy
Dominant Government United Federation of Planets

The Sol System is the star system of 9 planets that currently houses the seat of government for the United Federation of Planets and the military headquarters for Starfleet on the planet Earth. It is the home star system of the Human race.

History

Location

The Sol System is located on the border of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants in what is considered to be the heart of Federation territory. Due to its importance in galactic politics as the seat of government for the Federation itself, the Sol System has been formally classified as both Sector 001 and the Sol Sector despite it consisting of only a single star system. This makes the star system formally a constituent world of both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Physical Characteristics

Sol

Sol (Star)
Sol, also known as the Sun, is a G-Type Star located on the border of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Mercury

Mercury (Sol I)
Mercury (also known as Sol I) is the first planet of the Sol system and is a Class B world. Mercury orbits the star Sol at a distance of about 58 million kilometers and features a dayside temperature that could go as high as 430° Celsius.

Venus

Venus (Sol II)
Venus (also known as Sol II) is the Class N second planet of the Sol system. Terraformed by the Starfleet Colonial Operations Division, Venus is a common site for advanced flight training for Starfleet Academy students due to Venus' intense atmospheric storms caused by the greenhouse effect that had consumed the planet and causes temperatures in excess of 462° Celsius.

Earth

Earth (Sol III)
Earth (also known as Sol III) is the Class M third planet of the Sol system. Earth is the homeworld of both Humans and the Voth and also serves as the capital of the United Federation of Planets. Orbiting the central star, Sol, at a distance of over 200 million kilometers, Earth is one of the most important locations in the galaxy. It currently hosts the Federation Council, the Office of the Federation President, and Starfleet Headquarters.

Earth Defense Network

The Earth Defense Network is a series of artificial satellites designed to provide planetary defense for Earth itself and is considered a last chance defense for the world before it would be attacked by an enemy force. Incredibly powerful, the Earth Defense Network is a multitiered collection of varied defensive structures. The outermost layer consists of a series of unmanned, small multispectral sensor arrays, outfitted with Tachyon Detection Grids designed to locate cloaked ships, that serve as an early warning system by continually scanning incoming vessels looking for threats. Starfleet vessels approaching Earth have internal transponders that clear the vessel from being tagged by the Earth Defense Network. Should a nonaligned or unidentified vessel be detected, a starship will be immediately deployed to escort it to Spacedock for inspection. Once a threat is detected, detailed sensor data is then transmitted to the second layer of the defense grid: a series of unmanned orbital defense platforms. These orbital defense platforms are strategic structures that are equipped with powerful automated Pulse Phaser Cannons and Torpedo Launchers that are designed to lock onto any incoming any force and attack it until either the enemy is destroyed or the platform itself lost. Should this layer be pierced a series of orbital defensive shield emitters will activate to place a forcefield barrier around Earth until further help can arrive. Starfleet maintains a permanent detachment of vessels at Earth at all times to provide defense in a final effort should an invading force attack the planet.

Luna

Luna (Sol IIIa)
Luna is a planetoid that is a natural satellite of the planet Earth. Colonized by United Earth in the 22nd Century, Luna is currently inhabited by over 75 million people and features a surface based shipyard known as Tranquility Base.

Spacedock

Spacedock
One of Starfleet's largest orbital installations, the Spacedock in orbit of Earth is one of the most important outposts in the Federation and has been instrumental in Starfleet Operations.

Mars

Mars (Sol IV)
Mars (also known as Sol IV) was the inhabited, Class-K fourth planet of the Sol system. Mars orbits Sol with a mean distance of 228 million kilometers and features multiple starship support structures as well as a well populated colony of almost 200 million.

Mars Defense Perimeter

The Mars Defense Perimeter is a series of artificial satellites designed to provide defense for the inner worlds of the Sol System and is a multitiered collection of varied defensive structures. The outermost layer consists of a series of unmanned, small multispectral sensor arrays, outfitted with Tachyon Detection Grids designed to locate cloaked ships, that serve as an early warning system by continually scanning incoming vessels looking for threats. Should a nonaligned or unidentified vessel be detected, a starship will be immediately deployed to escort it to the nearest outpost for inspection. Should this layer be pierced warning will be sent that brings the Earth Defense Network to immediate alert.

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yard

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yard
The Utopia Planitia Shipyards are a Federation starship construction and repair facility in orbit of Mars. Along with the San Francisco Fleet Yards in Earth orbit, the Utopia Planitia Shipyards are one of the major starship design and construction facilities of Starfleet.

Asteroid Belt

The asteroid belt, also known simply as the belt, is an asteroid belt in the Sol system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Many scientists have theorized that the Asteroid Belt is a debris field left behind from a planet that did not fully form in the Sol system. Several larger structures in the Asteroid Belt, such as the dwarf planet Vesta, have been colonized by United Earth.

Jupiter

Jupiter (Sol V)
Jupiter (also known as Sol V) is the fifth and largest planet of the Sol system. A Class J gas giant, the planet is noteworthy for the Great Red Spot, its many moons, and bands of cloud layers. It orbits Sol at a rough distance of 778 million kilometers and has a diameter of 142,700 kilometers.

Jupiter Station

Jupiter Station
Jupiter Station is a Starfleet Research and Development facility in orbit of Jupiter. It is primarily known for developments in the fields of shipboard support technologies, but it also serves as a maintenance and repair facility for Starfleet vessels.

Saturn

Saturn (Sol VI)
Saturn (also known as Sol VI) is the Class J gas giant sixth planet of the Sol system and is well known for its impressive ring structure. Saturn has a mass 95 times greater than that of Earth and its diameter is close to 120,800 kilometers. It orbits Sol at a mean distance of 1.4 billion kilometers and features multiple Starfleet Academy flight ranges for enhanced training purposes.

Uranus

Uranus (Sol VII)
Uranus (also known as Sol VII) is the Class J seventh planet of the Sol system. It has the coldest planetary atmosphere in the Sol System and is roughly 20 AU from its parent star.

Neptune

Neptune (Sol VIII)
Neptune (also known as Sol VIII) is the Class J eighth planet of the Sol system and is roughly 30 AU from its parent star. The 18,000 km thick atmosphere is made of nitrogen, water and ice and also features a high surface pressure and a temperature of -200 degrees Celsius. The planet’s magnetosphere and axis of rotation are misaligned, producing complex electromagnetic distortions.

Pluto

Pluto (Sol IX)
Pluto (also known as Sol IX) is the ninth planet in the Sol system and is a Class C world. Pluto has been a point of contention for many since it was discovered and frequently has its planetary status challenged by scientists and cartographers. At present Pluto is currently classified as a planet and is home to the Federation Starfleet museum.
