Spacedock is an Epsilon Series Starbase in Earth orbit that is the administrative hub of Starfleet.

History

Conceived as a military outpost for colonial defense, Spacedock would be built with a vast interior, with the intention that numerous starships could dock for repairs and refits. Seen as the pinnacle in Federation construction, once completed and tested it was the intention that additional facilities would be built throughout the Federation. Construction on the first starbase of this class, Earth Spacedock, was initiated in 2247 and it would become the largest artificial structure in near-Earth orbit when completed nearly 40 years later.

During construction additional mission profiles were applied to Earth Spacedock. It was decided during the Federation/Klingon Conflict of 2257 that Spacedock would become a secondary command center for the entirety of Starfleet and would assume full responsibility for this role should Starfleet Headquarters, in San Francisco become incapacitated. Due to the loss of Starbase 1 to the Klingon House of D'Ghor in battle, Starfleet Tactical ordered a design revision to implement armament aboard the in progress station. When the Federation Council was briefed on this the United Earth Government filed an injunction due to fears of a weaponized outpost in orbit of Earth. A compromise was reached establishing a high-powered shield grid aboard the station with the intention that Starfleet would be able to respond with a reasonable defense force should conflict erupt. The Corps of Engineers, however, agreed to still install the weapon emplacements just leave them in an inactive state.

Despite being incomplete, Spacedock was able to come online in 2270 in a rudimentary capacity while work continued on construction of the remainder of the compound and was placed under the command of Admiral Isaac Garrett. During Admiral Garrett's tenure the USS Yorktown was assigned to patrol the Sol System while further work continued on development of Spacedock. During the 2270s the largest single sensor array, which was so sensitive that it could detect a meter-sized object half a light-year away, was installed on Spacedock to enhance its defensive capabilities.

Work on Spacedock was completed in 2280 and the station was reassigned to the command of Fleet Admiral Henry Marrow. As Spacedock was considered the pinnacle of Starbase construction, Starfleet Headquarters chose to assign it the responsibility of designing the next generation deep space explorer: the Excelsior Class starship. Life aboard the station was fairly routine with many officers and crew aboard the station thinking that life aboard the station was dull. That was, however, until the USS Enterprise was stolen from the station and the USS Excelsior disabled by Admiral James T. Kirk in 2285. A year later the station was no less dull when an alien probe disabled the station during an attempt to reestablish contact with the extinct species the Humpbacked Whale. The station was restored through the efforts of the Enterprise crew, who were reassigned to the USS Enterprise-A for their actions.

Life aboard Spacedock would return to being routine shortly afterward. The station continued to be on the cutting edge of new starship and technological development for many decades until further developments in spaceframe design led to the creation of larger vessels. Rather than scrap the historic station, Starfleet Command chose to instead refit Spacedock in 2347 based upon the design of the upcoming Galaxy Class Starship. Spacedock would remain fully operational during the refit which would include enhancing the docking facilities, improving the power systems, and establishment of the station's Phaser emplacements. Construction was completed in conjunction with the launch of the Starship Galaxy in 2357.

During the Borg Incursion of 2366-2367, Spacedock was out of position due to its geosynchronous orbit over San Francisco to assist in planetary defense. Because of this the Federation Council and the Office of the Federation President requested that the Starfleet Corps of Engineers work to modify the RCS Thrusters of the station to become a propulsion system able to move the station in a hostile engagement. Starfleet began work on the modifications to the station; however, these changes went on a backburner until the 2370s during which the Federation was faced with a renewed Klingon threat. By the time of the Dominion War, Starfleet had effectively made Spacedock a mobile battlestation in Earth orbit. Despite these advancements, Spacedock was disabled during the Breen attack on Earth in 2375. Spacedock was disabled during the attack by sabotage, resulting in several vessels - including the Starship Enterprise-E being trapped in the docking garage during the incident. The Enterprise was able to destroy the station's docking bay door and escape in time to repel the Breen forces alongside the Starship Columbia.

Spacedock would be instrumental in defending Earth from the Borg Incursion of 2376; however, life aboard the station returned to normal shortly afterward. It was not until the outbreak of Klingon hostilities during the final days of the 24th Century that Spacedock would see an increase in her need once more. Admiral Jorel Quinn selected Spacedock to serve as his command base during the war and he would require frequent battle drills to ensure that the station was ready for combat. When the Transwarp Network came alive the risks to the station became even greater. Because of this Admiral Quinn would hand select the Commanding Officer of Spacedock to assist him and selected several Starfleet luminaries - including Tom Paris and Akira Sulu - to serve in this role during his tenure. Spacedock would never see combat against the Klingons, but it would find itself tested in other ways in the 25th Century.

In early 2410, Spacedock was heavily damaged by Species 8472 as a distraction for their main target: Qo'noS. Admiral Quinn was severely injured and several members of the Station's crew, including Chief Science Officer E'genn, were revealed to be 8472 infiltrators. When repaired the station would become a primary target of the true source of danger to the Milky Way Galaxy, the Iconians. Spacedock was severely damaged and almost destroyed during the conflict with the Iconians in Earth orbit. Starfleet Headquarters ordered the station to be evacuated and repairs to commence once the station was deemed safe.

It was not until 2419 that Spacedock would be reactivated. Placed under the command of Admiral Akira Sulu, Spacedock would once more become a hub of commercial, scientific, and technological advancement. The Starship Excelsior was assigned as mission support vessel at this time as well. Sulu would remain in command of Spacedock until Admiral Sulu accepted a transfer to the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone. Command of the Station transferred to Admiral Lynz in 2425 following her reassignment due to the near destruction of the USS Enterprise. Admiral Lynz would remain in command of Spacedock until she was promoted to Commander in Chief of Starfleet by President Gruzy in 2427. Command has since transferred to Captain Sean Finnegan, who was summarily promoted to the rank of Commodore by Admiral Lynz.
